What is World Heart Day?
World Heart Day is celebrated globally on the 29th September and is World Heart Federation and the world’s biggest platform for cardiovascular diseases awareness promotion. Doctors and national heart foundations all over the world are using their online and offline platforms to speak about the theme this year and to create awareness.
What is the main aim of World Heart Foundation?
According to the World Heart federation, 80% of premature deaths from cardiovascular disease (CVD) could be avoided if four main risk factors – tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful use of alcohol – are controlled.
On the occasion of World Heart Day, we wanted to share with you some statistics relevant to the state of the four main risk factors for CVD in India.
What are the actions taken by India?
However, according to World Heart Federation, India as a nation has taken its stance against the four main CVD risk factors and has taken action on World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Global action plan for prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD), following are actions taken:
1. In line with WHO’s Global action plan for the prevention and control of NCDs 2013- 2020, in 2015 India became the first country to develop specific national targets and indicators aimed at reducing the number of global premature deaths from NCDs by 25% by 2025
2. India’s National Monitoring Framework for Prevention and Control of NCDs calls for a 50% relative reduction in household use of solid fuel and a 30% relative reduction in prevalence of current tobacco use by 2025
3. India has implemented WHO’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control aimed at reducing the demand for tobacco products. The country has prohibited sales of tobacco products around educational institutions, restricted tobacco imagery in films and TV programmes, banned some smokeless tobacco products and developed tobacco-free guidelines for educational institutions.
